Ingredients

  • 2 Ounces White Rum
  • 1 Ounce Simple Syrup
  • 1 Ounce Lime Juice
  • Fresh Mint Leaves (6-8)
  • 2 Ounces Soda Water
  • 1 Lime Wheel (garnish)
  • 1 Mint Sprig (garnish)

Method

  1. Pour the lime juice into the glass.
  2. Hold the mint leaves gently in your hands and give them a delicate clap to release the essential oils, and put them in the glass.
  3. If you’re using freshly squeezed lime juice, cut up some of the lime shell and put it in the glass.
  4. Gently muddle to extract the flavours and juices.
  5. Add the simple syrup and rum.
  6. Fill the glass with ice, add the soda water, then stir, using some vertical motion to get the mint and lime throughout the drink.
  7. For the garnish, slide the lime wheel onto the rim. Whack the mint sprig against your wrist to release the oils, and place it in the glass.
  8. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For the best results, use fresh lime juice instead of bottled lime juice. It will provide a brighter and more vibrant flavor to the cocktail.

  • White rum is traditionally used in a mojito, but you can experiment with different types of rum, such as light rum or gold rum, to find your preferred flavor profile.

  • Muddling the mint leaves is an essential step to release the aromatic oils and flavors of the mint. Be sure not to over-muddle, as it can result in a bitter taste.

  • Crushed ice works best in a mojito as it helps to keep the drink cold and dilute it slightly. You can crush ice by placing ice cubes in a clean kitchen towel and gently tapping with a rolling pin or mallet.

What Is A Mojio Cocktail Made Of?

To craft a classic mojito, you'll need 2 ounces of white rum, 1 ounce of simple syrup, and 1 ounce of fresh lime juice.

For the white rum, a good (relatively cheap) option is Bacardi. It has a clean and crisp taste with notes of tropical fruits, making it a popular choice for mojitos.

If you want to go a little fancier, Plantation 3 Stars offers a balanced combination of fruity and spicy notes, making it an interesting choice for a mojito with added complexity.

For the simple syrup, you could just use white sugar, however turbinado sugar goes quite well here. Turbinado sugar is a raw sugar that can lend a gentle caramel note and a slight hint of richness to the drink.
